The 55th International Art Exhibition, La Biennale di Venezia
At the 55th International Art Exhibition, La Biennale di Venezia which ran from 1 June to 24 November 2013, the Pavilion of Turkey presented Ali Kazma's video series "Resistance" under the curatorship of Emre Baykal, the Exhibitions Director of ARTER with the sponsorship of Vehbi Koç Foundation and Fiat. The Venice Biennale was visited by over 475,000 people during the six months it was open.
Ali Kazma’s multi-channel video installation Resistance explores the interventions and strategies that both release the body from its own restrictions and restrict it in order to control it. As an extensive survey on the contemporary discourses, techniques and management tactics developed for the human body, Resistance is an attempt to unravel the interventions imposed and practised on the body today. In this comprehensive project premiered at the Venice Biennale, Ali Kazma explores the ways in which the body is shaped today through scientific, cultural and social tools, and how as a performance site it is repeatedly reproduced.
