Project “City Walls of Istanbul” moves to digital platform
The City Walls of Istanbul Project was initiated by Koç University’s Stavros Niarchos Foundation Center for Late Antiquity and Byzantine Studies (GABAM) in 2017 and carried out by an international team of 40 people. It transfers the City Walls of Istanbul, some of which are on the UNESCO World Heritage List, to a digital platform. In recording to reflecting the monument’s current state through an architectural inventory supported by more than 6,000 new photographs on an interactive map, the project also documents various changes that the City Walls of Istanbul have undergone over time by bringing together hundreds of old images from different collections. The project conveys the architectural units of the walls such as towers, gates and curtain walls, the inscriptions, spolia and decoration elements on the walls via the interactive map, presenting a holistic evaluation of the monument. The City Walls of Istanbul Project displays the results of current studies on the architecture, history and other features of the monument, which is one of the master examples of Byzantine military architecture, with over forty scientific and original articles written by experts.
