Stories from us
Banu Devrim
Painter
Can you tell us a little bit about yourself?
I was born in 1965 and spent some of my life abroad. My first introduction to painting happened here in these workshops. I received my initial instruction in painting at Istanbul Pera Fine Arts. I have participated in many group and personal exhibitions, fairs and contests. I am a member of the Istanbul Painters Association and the Recreation Association board of directors. I teach classes on painting in my own private studio and at the GölcükMunicipalPublicEducationCenter.
Tell us about how you first became acquainted with the Vehbi Koç Foundation and your connection?
About three years ago, I moved from Istanbul to Gölcük, and met Dilek Perçin. This was about the time of the opening for the VKV Ford Otosan Cultural and SocialCenter. My daughter Yasemin Devrim is the director of the Flamenco Istanbul Association and a dance instructor. My youngest daughter Önay Devrim, Yasemin and her husband Murtaza Torun conducted the first opening for the CulturalCenter. That is when I met Pınar and Fulya. I got in the habit of stopping by this magnificent center not just for the activities but for the conversations filled with their delightful vibrancy.
What are your future plans and goals?
My plans for the future obviously revolve mostly around my two daughters. They are my most important achievements! Art is, of course, something that goes with me everywhere... I am teaching students and their success is important for me. It is important for me to follow fairs both here and abroad. The times are changing so rapidly and I think that artists have to keep pace with the changes. I try to invest in myself. I do lots of research.
What role does VKV play in your life?
The VKV Ford Otosan Cultural and Social Center is my oxygen, my palette and my paint... It really is that essential! When I moved to Gölcük, my greatest fear was that I would be separated from art. I frequently set aside time to attend exhibits in Istanbul just to stay connected. However, this fantastic center has brought to my doorstep everything I longed for and couldn't live without. In fact, it has reached so many people! Spending hours immersed in art with friendly people in a wholesome environment is a beautiful feeling. Personally, I would like to thank everyone who has worked to make so many beautiful things possible. Now, my only other wish is for a painting and sculpture museum.
